The water bodies of rivers and the sea accommodate 72 thousand tons of fish. Besides, there is appreciable number of wild animals and reptiles. The above mentioned resources contribute to the food security through ensuring red meat sufficiency, milk, poultry products and appreciable surplus of livestock for exportation. Moreover, the revenues of animal exports for 2010 reached 258 million US$. The animal resources contribute with more than the fifth to Gross Domestic Product GDP , beside providing wastes for leather and skin industry, concentrates and manure. Equally important, the animal resources contribute to agricultural operations, transport, draught, portage, enrichment of parks, entertainment, tourism and the socio-religious aspects. It is an income source for 40% of the Sudanese population and it is an attractive resources for investment, beside it`s economic and strategic reservoir for Sudan.
Investment in Animal Resources: Investment is one of the main factors that assist promotion of economy and it is the driving power for its close connection with capital creation and can enable the national economy to progress and raise production. In a view of Sudan vast fertile land suitable for cultivation, with provision of national pastures, variable climates, animals and available fisheries and water resources, investment has the most appropriate climate to thrive in animal resources that has less productive inputs in comparison with its counterparts of other sectors. The availability of natural resources in Sudan and large diseases free zone, beside global scarcity of food and its high prices, all that has drawn attention from the neighboring countries to the country. Also, the announcement of Sudan as the prospective global food basket in 1974, in addition to the country freedom from epizootics such as Bovine Spongi-form Encephalopathy BSE, Rift Valley Fever and Avian Influenza has drawn attention to invest in Sudan, especially from neighbouring Arab countries, in many fields of agriculture and animal resources sectors. This will make the efforts and expertise consolidation necessary, with coordination between the different sectors to integrate expertise and exploit the available potentialities for proper use of the country gifted resources, so as to bring benefits to Sudan, neighbouring Arab, African and world countries. Therefore, Sudan can occupy its pioneering position among the advanced countries. The Available Investment Chances in Animal Resources and Fisheries The Aspects of investment in animal sector are variable according to the variety of the sector and they are as follows: Meat production projects with high capacity that is not less than 7 thousand tons of mutton, 2 thousand tons of beef and camel - meat in the pastoral farms.
Establishment of modern slaughterhouses with specifications that enable them to be exports abattoirs that enjoys comprehensive services. Meat storage projects. Dairy production projects with high capacity that is not less than 500 thousand cows. Milk and milk products manufacturing projects Broilers production projects
7- Layers production projects. 8- The comprehensive veterinary services projects in the traditional breeding areas including breeds upgrading centers, vaccine production, veterinary quarantines establishment, comprehensive veterinary services, fixed hospitals, mobile clinics and veterinary drugs for animals. 9- Fisheries and aquatic animals projects in the brackish and salty waters ( the Red Sea), preparation of boats , ships , machines, modern equipment , ice factories, coolers and fisheries products manufacturing. 10- Fish breeding projects in the brackish and salty water using the modern technologies and facilitated with all equipments.
1/ The Fields of Red Meat Production: The relative characteristics of investing in the so-called field represented through the increasing demand of the Sudanese livestock especially from the Arab countries. As Sudanese cattle, sheep, goats and camels are classified as the main produces of the red meat even though some breeds are dairy products. Besides, there are big estimates of animals, approximately 104 million heads that provide the required production of the red meat for the local consumption and exports mainly, and good chances to establish meat products industry allow multiple ways for investing in the so-called field and it is as follows: Sheep breeding in the natural rangeland (goats + sheep). Cattle breeding in the natural rangelands. Pastoral farms breeding. Cattle and sheep fattening farms. Meat products manufacturing. a) Sheep breeding in the natural rangelands: The sloppy area from the Nile eastward up to the Chadian borders westward that the railway of Kosti – Nyala in the south is the most suitable area to establish investments in the field of sheep production in the natural range land for the following reasons: Suitability of natural ecological circumstances for desert sheep breeding. Low breeding cost. Adoption of nomadic system in breeding and that is the most suitable exploitation of the available natural resources in the area.
Availability of veterinary laboratories, medical and therapeutic services as there are veterinary laboratories in Nyala and El.Obeid. Elingaz AlGarbi Highway formulates a real progress in the field of transportation infrastructure reducing transport cost of animals beside the railway. Availability of qualification and expertise in flocks gradual breeding as result of practice. The possibility to depend on the livestock movements through traditional routes on foot to the consumption areas and exportation ports.
b) Cattle breeding in the natural rangeland: The cattle breeding area is located in rainy savannah on the southern side of sheep breeding zone. It is the most suitable area for cattle breeding in the natural rangeland starting from the railway Kosti-Nyala in the north and southward till Bahr-Alarab boundaries and eastern of the Nile in Butana plains to include southern of Blue Nile and White Nile and northern of Upper Nile. The suitability of natural and ecological circumstances to breed cattle and adopt semi-nomadic pattern beside spreading of agricultural projects in the area that provide the agricultural by products and possibility to transport cattle on foot to consumption area and exportation ports all these confirm the relative characteristic that encourage investment in this filed. c) Pastoral Farm Breeding: The introduction of breeding systems in the pastoral farms aims to raise production and annual retrials from the national herd to be used in the year long. One of the most important provisions for investment success in the so-called pattern is the control in herd size allowing the most proper exploitation of the available range lands. Revenues can be increased from investment in this field through production of variable agricultural systems in the mechanical agricultural areas where agricultural by products beside natural pasture can be utilized as fodder (plant- animal).
c) Pastoral Farm Breeding: There are some factors governing the choice of pastoral farm sites and they are as follows:
- Nearness to tarmac roads.
Nearness to water resources. Annual rain fall. Land property system. Soil and vegetation. Availability of complementary feed.
d) Sheep and cattle fattening centers: Fattening is considered as the final stage to prepare animals before slaughtering on exportation and livestock fattening areas locate near slaughter houses and export ports, especially in central and eastern Sudan, and they are characterized with the following:
- Available industrial and agricultural by products with fodder resources.
Nearness to slaughter houses, exportation ports and great consumption areas. Explicitness of transport traffics for availability of tarmac roads. Location of fattening centers within the borders of the disease free zone.
e) Meat Products Manufacturing: Sudan witnesses renaissance in the field of animal resources infrastructure of modern slaughter houses (Alkadro, Gemco, Sabuloga, Ganawa, Karare and Gdaref) operation in preparation of export meat, also, other slaughter housese prepare the locally consume meat. There are many meat production factories producing sausage, minced meat, burger, meat powder, stake and martidella even if their capacities are humble, they can be operated on the full capacity and making their products according to quality and prices competition for there is no recession in meat markets and it is not expected in the future.
2/ Dairy Production Field: There are big numbers of Sudanese dairy breeds of cattle that are able genetically up grade such as Kenana and Butana which contribute with appreciable milk quantities, and it develops according to increase in the herd size and improvement of animal health and husbandry, that are estimated as approximately 483,800 thousand tons for 2011,with increase percentage of 9%. There are 14 milk factories in Sudan built according to the international specifications to represent the future ambition for realization of self-sufficiency and exportation. The big cities are the main milk and milk products consumption markets and there is an increasing demand to this commodity, and investment in this industry depends on the following:
- Availability of input such as fodder concentrates.
Availability of service and veterinary care. Provision of tarmac roads. Availability of irrigated green fodder to ensure food sustainability all the year long. Nearness to the big cities and dwellings.
The selected areas for dairy farms: There are areas located between The Blue Nile, White Nile and Northern States. They are consider more suitable to establish dairy production projects including all big cities (Khartoum- Wad Medani-Atbara- Rabak)which are more suitable investment sites in the same way, the most suitable locations for cheese industry and the traditional production areas where recession of raw milk marketing result in surplus that support the industry, especially in Western, White Nile, Butana and Kordofan. Milk Factories in Sudan: Al.Rawabi – Khartoum Dairy Company – El.Obeid(Kordofan)- Barakat – Butana(Al.shaheed) – Capo(The Blue Dairy Co.ltd)- Bulgaria- Babanosa- Loli – Best –Kenana dairy Co.ltd. 3/ Poultry production: The so-called sector contributes with approximately 30 thousand tons of table eggs and 68 thousand ton of poultry meat in 2011 this leap in production resulted from the state exerted efforts to settle poultry production in Sudan and change production pattern to semi-intensive through provision of up graded breeds; usage of balance fodder; vaccination; treatment and veterinary services. In spite of all efforts exerted to develop the sector, its productivity is still limited especially in the field of broiler production for the limitnes of the production units sizes and connection of this production pattern with the economical, social and technical levels of lobours in the so-called sector. Khartoum state is the biggest in Sudan regard to investment in poultry production for 8.5%of poultry investment projects in Sudan are occupied by it. The current investment requirement: 2008 million US$ to construct pens. 50 million US$ to purchase hatchery equipments. Slaughter houses with capacity of 586 thousand chickens per day. Other production inputs and equipment for 154.1 million chicks requires breeding of 1.5 million mother and Khartoum and Gezira states are considered the most suitable for ِ\poultry production because the requirement of animal production industry are available in the two states.
a) chicks Production: Chicks production farms can be established near the large cities ( El.Obeid- Rabak- Juba- Waw- Nyala- Kassala- Gadaref), this is due to availability of markets that can accommodate the products of the above farms through solving some problems facing the so-called industry in each area. The most important potentialities for chicks production in Sudan are as follow:
- Nearness of the sites to the international ports.
Availability of infrastructure for chicks industry. Technical and managerial expertise. Availability markets.
b)Table eggs broilers production: The potentialities of this industry do not differ a lot from their counterparts of chick industry, as cities and towns are considered as the biggest consumers, nearer to the fodder resources, have provision of transport and cooling means which help a lot in establishment of this industry in the adjacent rural areas. c)Fodder Factories: Choosing the near places to raw inputs for fodder production should be born in mind beside infrastructure, explicit transportation and products marketing. The suitable sites for mollase factories are located near sugar factories in Sennar, Al.Guneid, Asalaia and Kenana. Individual need:
Poultry meat: 9Kg per year Table eggs: 9.3 kg per year
4/ Fisheries and aquatic animals: The investment in this field is widely possible for the variety and big size of the fish and other aquatic animals reservoir. Also, fish breeding contributes with provision of additive potentialities to produce fish in the country offering alternative for the red meat, so that will affect positively in the animal export. Also, fisheries open projects of net, boats and packing factories which allows chances for labour and experts to export outside in accordance with the international specification. The most important investment potentialities in the fisheries sector:
- Available fish reservoir.
Available product input. Available markets. Available infrastructure especially ice factories.
There are different fields for investment in this sector: 1/ Fish investment in the salty water of the Red Sea: Shells and pearl production in the northern part of the Red Sea in Dunganap gulf.
